Texans Lucy Griffith and Darlene Marwitz collaborate in SONGS OF THE OCOTILLO, mixing poetic and visual art that pays homage to the iconic and beloved plant of the Chihuahuan Desert. Griffith’s words conjure the spirit and resilience of the waving ocotillos that spring to life with a few drops of rain. Marwitz’s landscapes reflect the solitude, open spaces, distant views, and hardy flora upon the scrabble of the desert floor in Far West Texas.

Together, their work captures the quiet drama of desert life—where ocotillos rise, bloom, and bend with the rhythms of rain, wind, and time. The exhibition also features a collaborative chapbook, poetry reading, and a limited release of collectible archival poster broadsides.

Lucy Griffith’s work grows out of a passionate love for our southern borderlands, and for their harsh and harshly beautiful landscape. In her award-winning debut We make a Tiny Herd, her poems are a poignant lovesong to west Texas, and to the power of ‘a woman alone’—be it the nearly mythic figure of ‘The Burro Lady,’ or Griffith herself, calling across the desert to ‘La Reina.’ Her most recent collection The Place the Spiders Waved is a memoir in verse, a celebration of the brush country, a testament to how these spaces can shape a life.

Darlene Marwitz works in mixed media to combine textiles and acrylics. Her studio techniques vary and are layered, from sketching to block printing to stitching and collage. She finds inspiration in the mountains and open expanses of the high desert plateau that surrounds her home in Marfa.
